The Silver Lining

Undoubtedly, 2020 has been a year of perpetual hardship. From the black community’s gallant fight for the global preservation and advancement of black lives, to the physical, mental and financial effects of corona and everything in-between, it’s very much agreed that the human race has suffered more than one pandemic head on. There’s been pain where there once was pleasure, tears where there was a sliver of joy and excessive access to information where people once barricaded themselves, shamefully, with content in their ignorance.

Surviving 2020 has made it almost impossible to deny all that ails the human race. Is it greed? Perhaps all our mishaps are manifestations of our lust for money, power and fame. Perhaps, the sins of Cain still ail us and we suffer the same fate: after all, the sins of the father will be visited upon his children to the third and fourth generations. We find ourselves living on edge, doubting the very systems enstooled to serve us– a pathetic excuse for governance as it has failed us for generations on end and will continue to.

If I were to dwell on how detrimental the years have been to us, I could write a dissertation on the deliberate abuse of power and the mechanisms of social engineering that has caused such a huge shift in our worldview in the span of a year. However, it’s essential to recognize how positively impactful the year has been to our development as a race.

This year has taught us, albeit abrasively, a thing or two about our resilience as Homo sapiens. Our ability to adapt, persevere and our free will to choose love has shone through in a time of persistent darkness which aimed to shackle us. The goal of fear mongering during these pandemics we’ve been suffering is to keep love at bay; yet, our innate good will as humans has fought to preserve the things we crave & love the most: Family!

Yes the year has been hectic, yes its easy to list everything wrong with the year but here are a few silver linings for you.

  • You are a survivor. Surviving 2020 is a huge accomplishment most people didn’t get to experience.

  • You are strong. Your mental health is fairly intact (fairly because i’m assuming you’re not suicidal.. hopefully not because you’re too strong to contemplate ending it all before it begins)- which brings me to my next point.

  • You are blessed. You have the gift of a brand new year, a new chapter, a clean slate to be whoever the hell you wanna be. To start and end anything you want. To start that business venture, to put yourself out there, to travel, to chase your passion.

  • You have grace and favor to make mistakes and the good Abba having foresight, will for-give, restore and honor you.

  • You have the opportunity to rekindle or create new relationships and memories you can hold when times get tough. The chance to love hardly, because if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that life is indeed short.

  • Lastly, you have ME! to talk your ears off for the entire 2021, if you’d like to hear more from me; that is. (Subscribe to my newsletter down below)

  • Lastly lastly for real don’t forget to TURN UP!

    -it’s Drie!
